For many obese patients, long-term, sustained weight loss can be elusive, despite strict diet and exercise programs. Many struggle daily with their weight and related medical conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea and diabetes, as well as with the stigma of obesity.

To provide additional help for these patients, The Center for Bariatric Surgery in Providence, RI, a program of Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, offers new hope and a long-term solution. Bariatrics is the field of medicine that specializes in treating obesity, and bariatric surgery refers to surgery that promotes weight loss.

The Center for Bariatric Surgery has been recognized for high quality in bariatric surgery by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), which designated the program as a fully accredited MBSAQIP: Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Accreditation Quality Improvement Program. The MBSAQIP program accredits inpatient and outpatient bariatric surgery centers in the United States and Canada that have undergone an independent, voluntary, and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards. Bariatric surgery accreditation not only promotes uniform standard benchmarks, but also supports continuous quality improvement.

The designation comes after a lengthy and rigorous review process, which involves a thorough site inspection and evaluation of patient outcomes. The designation reflects our center’s ongoing commitment to providing the highest level of care possible for our bariatric surgery patients.
